What to listen for: A high pitched piping whistle at dawn and dusk. Start listening in early April.
Along with the Robin and the Dandelion, the Spring Peeper's call is one of the sure signs of spring.
This small frog (It is only 2-3 cm in length, about the size of an adult's thumbnail!) can be grey, brown or olive in colour and has a mysterious dark mark on its back in the shape of an 'X'. Peepers are found in woodlands near small ponds or swamps starting in April. They make a high-pitched, piping whistle every two seconds, and many peepers join in to form a chorus. Heard from a distance, large choruses of spring peepers may sound like sleigh bells ringing. Spring Peepers are very hard to see so make sure you are listening for their call.
