With the spring thaw, the ice and snow melt away. The ice covering lakes gets thin quite quickly, so be careful. Once the temperature stays above freezing, the ice is gone until next winter. Start looking at the lakes around mid-March to make sure you don't miss the opening! You won't be the only one watching for ice free lakes - our loons and other lake-nesting birds will also be watching very carefully so they can return to the lakes to breed.
